Whoever said OPM is dead must have been living under a rock.
Kidding aside, OPM is definitely NOT dead. The local music scene can even make your barely-functioning hearts beat with its fresh, unique and crisp rhythm and melody, and lyrics more painful than an open wound rubbed with salt.
If you’re someone like me who masochistically craves for the ache only sappy, sappy sad songs can give, here are some songs made by our rising local artists you should listen to. These heart-wrenching and tear-inducing musical compositions are about love not working out, getting hurt by people you loved, endings, relationships and almost-relationships.
Basically, this is sadness and “feels” expressed through creativity, artistry, and music.
1. General Scheme of Things by BP Valenzuela
“Baby, if you left it to me, I wouldn’t have let you leave but I’m just a speck here in the general scheme of things.”
When things went downhill and the circumstances were just too complicated and too difficult for you to go on, General Scheme of Things will remind you that some relationships just won’t work out no matter how badly you wanted them to.
2. Binary Codes by Tonight We Sleep
“I begin to pick up the pieces you recklessly threw away. Did I amount to something at all? Did I mean anything to you at all?”
This song is perfect for anyone who got cheated on. Nothing explains betrayal, lies and that fucking pain in your chest better than Binary Codes.
3. Love in the Time of Mistaken Despondency by Niki Colet
“This is the goodbye kiss we never shared. All the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t put this broken daydream together again.”
For a love that turned sour and for happy days which are now over, Love In The Time of Mistaken Despondency will serve as a lullaby for that broken heart. It’s the kind of song you’d listen to at 3 in the morning while thinking of that one person.
4. Casanova by PurpleChicken
“Hindi ko na itatanong. Hayaan mo na yun. Hayaan mo na yun.”
This song is for a supposedly good romance that went straight down the drain before it even had its chance. If you love someone who isn’t ready for commitment even though it’s clearly obvious he/she wants you too, Casanova is for you. This song is the equivalent of a sigh you let out when you know it could’ve been something but wouldn’t.
5. Tayo Lang Ang May Alam by Peryodiko
“Pero tayo lang ang nakakaalam, nando’n sa pagitan ng paalam at pahiram.”
If you love someone who’s already in a relationship, Tayo Lang Ang May Alam would perfectly describe the secret intimacy, the forbidden love, the set-up of being the “other person” and the pain you’re probably experiencing right now. Also, don’t forget to check out its very fitting music video for extra feels strip.
Tayo Lang Ang May Alam was written as a response to Up Dharma Down’s Indak, yet another painful song you definitely should listen to.
That’s it for now
because nothing lasts.
